Coa some people have questioned me how to close the email account was hacked into. They have that problem quite often and they want the account to be closed, and immediately.
What can you do?
Besides not getting your accounts hacked in the first place, there is almost nothing you can do.
Of course, if your account has been hacked, you need to restore it. Start here as fast as you can: Email Hacked? 7 things you need to do NOW. But it may be too late; hackers can copy all the information they need to keep spam your friends and make it look like you.
What I can say is that closing your account is not going to help, and eventually can make things worse when you finally give up all control over it
You have a job and perhaps an email account on an important popular email service.
One day you get some reports from people you regularly exchange emails complaining that they’ve got what looks like spam from you. In fact, some junk mail that may have included malware, and some of your contacts can be sad because their computers were infected because of the email you send.
Except that you did not send it.
Fearing the worst, the hacker somehow had access to your email account, you back up your e-mail account and play with the expectation that the hackers will no longer have access to it.
And spam continue. Closure did not help.
There are several reasons this can happen.
Reason 1: Your account has never been hacked
There is a very good chance that never had anything wrong with your account and that it had not been hacked into.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is the most common scenario.
What most people do not realize is that email is extremely easy to fake. That means it’s very trivial for a spammer to make it look like an email to the “From:” address to your email without any kind of access to your account. It’s called “From: fake”, and if you look carefully the most spam to the “From:” email addresses that actually have nothing to do with the spam at all. The sender has been completely falsified.
What The ??? !!!! So how do they get your contacts?
Three things come to mind:
Blind luck. With millions and millions of spam being sent each day, it is very possible that your email address may have been falsified on spam sent to people you know, at random.
leaking information. For a time there was a way to identify some of your relationships on Facebook without having to log in to reveal the email addresses of the friends. Any kind of similar data breach or leak could expose similar relationships – even just communicate in a public forum where contact email address can do it. And of course, email transit are also displayed for all the servers that it happened to land on, so information about who you are mailing can also be something that can be harvested if the email server itself somehow compromised.
It could be one of your contacts who have been hacked. It could be the contact list from their account has been harvested by spammers, and thus your email address may have been harvested from it and then used to forge the “From: “lines in spam targeted friends and other contacts.
There’s really no way to tell 100% certain, but the first thing I want you to do is check your Sent Mail folder of your online accounts or the web interface. If you see spam in the folder that shows it was sent from your account, then really you’ve been hacked and should take the steps necessary to recover. If it’s not there, it is not proof of anything, but I really will not panic unless more evidence of an attack actually appear.
Reason 2: Hacker only reopen
When most people close their accounts in a panic, they simply go through the steps to close their account and nothing more.
Ultimately it is not just inefficient, but closing your account is not enough.
If you close your account, you will often find that there is an “out” – a way that, in a limited time, you can open your account then you should change your mind. And before you start with the idea, I can assure you that you will be surprised how often people change their thinking.
The approach “I do not really mean it!” Usually involves once again prove that you are the owner of the account, using your password and identity verification steps additional.
Sometimes it’s as simple as just log back into your account after you have “closed” it.
Hackers know all this.
They usually know that the account can be reopened. They usually know, or have changed, confirmed the account and contact information instead.
So, in your moments close the account, the hacker simply re-open it and continued to send spam from it.
Reason 3: You open an account
As I mentioned above, sometimes just need to log into this account sufficient to cancel its closure.
Multiple accounts these days is more than just email. Similar open accounts you can have the messaging program, calendars, online storage, photo sharing services, and much, much more.
If you cancel the email account, and then log in to a service that uses the account ID and password the same, you can re-activate your account email.
IF you intend to cancel your account, you have to always step out everything related to that account.
If the account can not simply be canceled.
Reason 4: Hackers do not need your account anymore
A common trick is to slip by hackers to an account has been hacked and they steal the contents of the address book.
In that scenario, the damage was done.
Even if you completely restored and account security, or even if you really, really cancel the account and it really, really was and still is canceled:
Hackers can still send spam to all your contacts, because they had stolen them.
Hackers can even make it look like spam from you, even though they are no longer using your account. As I mentioned above, the “From:” spoofing is trivially easy.
So you can put a lot of time and mental energy to close the account, and even if you are successful … it solve anything because the attackers left behind it a long .
Reason 5: It is now someone else’s account
If you close your account successfully, most of the care for their username (usually your email address) for “some time” – anywhere from a few days to a few months.
Then, they make it available to create a new account, because no one uses it.
Someone could (and if your name is special email desire, almost certainly will) open a new account with the email address that you have left behind. No, they will not have your data or your contacts, but now they will have your old email address.
They can be attacked. Heck, they might be spammers themselves. After actually close an account you lose all control over the e-mail address, and you have no idea who might get it someday in the future.
Old friend “closed” account may come back to haunt you.
