No Spam! It was not your fault
You’re minding your own business and one day, you get an email from someone you’ve never heard of and they are asking you to stop sending email to them. Or worse, they are angry. Or worse, they accuse you send them a virus! But you do not know them, you’ve never heard of them, and you know that you have never sent them an email.
Welcome to the world of the virus, where you can get an infection blamed on someone else. And there is worse news to come.
Before I get to that, there is always a slight possibility that your email account has been compromised. The solution is simple: change your password immediately. That will stop those who are using your account for malicious purposes continue, assuming that you have chosen a good password. (If you find that your account has indeed been compromised, you may want to change more than just your password.)
Welcome to the world of the virus, where you can get an infection blamed on someone else.
But these days, it is not the most common causes for the situation that I have described – the virus. And worse – there’s almost nothing you can do.
The virus typically infects without someone’s computer and then send spam, a lot of spam, spoofing the “From:” addresses that send email. Its addresses used to address spoofing? Any addresses that it can find and probably random. That may be another email address that it sent to the email address fed to it by a botnet, or perhaps even the address in the address book of the infected machine. The infected machine will send emails to everyone that it’s possible, looked as though it was sent by someone else.
And you can be one of the “others”, even if you have nothing to do with any of this.
If this email is being sent to your contacts without you have done so, and you find a message in the Sent Mail folder that you did not send, then your email account may be compromised two. Someone emailed view it seems that is from me to my contact, what can I do?
Especially, if your contacts are getting mail from you declare that you are stuck in some foreign countries and need money, your email account has almost certainly compromised. You want someone stolen my email account and my contact scam for money, what do I do?
If the email you send is now automatically included an advertisement of some kind that reads as if you wrote it, then why I compose a message in Hotmail now started with an ad it seems it is from me?
If you receive an email that looks like the “From:” Your name or names you recognize, but the display is the “From” email address wrong is this: Why do I get an email from a local person wrong email?.
Finally, if you do not know who is receiving the email “From:” you, then perhaps there is nothing wrong with that. And you are reading the article right here.
Peter, Paul and Mary Email
Let’s use a concrete example: Peter’s machine is infected with a virus. In his address book entry for your friends, Paul and Mary. Paul and Mary had never met, had never exchanged emails, and do not know each other – they each only know Peter. The virus will send emails on your computer with viruses Peter to Paul looked like it came from Mary. Paul may be wondering who the hell this Mary who is and why she sent him a virus, but she has never participated.
If you are in the position of Mary, you can see that it would be frustrating to be accused of something that you have nothing to do with and can not control.
For the record, your email address can end up in the address book of people you do not know as well. Different email programs will automatically keep the additional e-mail address was included in the email you receive or can from that email was forwarded. The virus has also been known to use other sources of email addresses or even move them around as spreading the virus. That means simply “friend of a friend” example that I use with Peter, Paul and Mary, while simple, can certainly not be the only way that you can email displayed as a forged “From” line.
What is important here is simply this – one way or the other, lying about virus senders email.
If someone accuses you send an email virus-laden and you are positive that you did not do it, then you have little other way than trying to educate them about how viruses work . Point them to this article if you like. But it is clear – you do not necessarily infected person nor received a letter claiming to be from a friend. That is some third party was. (And identifying a third party that is difficult – this is why virus writers use this technique.)
In other words, there is nothing you can do.
And of course make sure that you will not become infected yourself: do not open attachments from people you do not know and make sure you have a test virus and the virus definition files up-to-date. My recommendations are here: Security Software What do you suggest?
