Your Microsoft account
I addressed this issue from the perspective of Microsoft, you do not really have a “Hotmail” or “Outlook.com” account. What you have is a “Microsoft account” that happens to use a Hotmail account, MSN, Live, or Outlook.com email address as identification.
So what that means is that we will change the security information associated with your Microsoft account.
This is the simplest way:
Login to your email account.1 After entering, click on the name that appears in the upper right corner:
Click the account settings. Note that this has really moved from Outlook.com “Microsoft account”. This will show you the basic information about your account.
Click the Advanced Security Management in the lower left.
Because you’re about to make a change security-related, you will be asked to verify that you are the legitimate account holder. That happens by sending the code to one of the alternate address of your previous configuration or phone number.
This prevents a hacker who happened to gain access to your passwords from changing the security related to your account – a very popular activity.
The problem, of course, is what happens if you do not have any alternate phone number or email address listed, or those listed are no longer valid or your control.
Later, things became difficult.
Verify the account without defects
Select “I do not have any.”
The message changed, you know you are about to engage in a process somewhat more involved to maintain access to your account.
This would be a great time to have a recovery code. Unfortunately, most people in this situation have not done so. It’s something you have set before you need it. (Here’s how, in this way, but you will have to pass the validation process very much like we’re having here before you can.)
Assuming you do not have a recovery code, click No.
Now you can add a phone number or alternate email address as your confidential information, although it comes with a warning we will face in the short term. (Note that the phone without the need to have the ability to send text messages, call options will provide your code through automated voice.)
Enter the information that you choose – email or phone – and click Next.
Enter the code that was sent to your new phone is your choice or alternative email, and click Next.
Here’s the caveat: because you can not confirm that using alternative information previously existed and to set up new information, Microsoft imposed a 30-day delay before you can access anything related to security.
Once 30 days have passed, replace the phone number or a new email address, you select will have full effect, and you can return the settings to change the related security continues.
Account verification with alternates
If you can still access the phone number or email address replacement is configured before, the process is simple. Once you have clicked the advanced security management to begin this process, you were presented with a list of contact information for replacing partially obscured.
If you know and still have access to any of the alternative numbers or email addresses part display (perhaps after waiting 30 days), choose one you know, fill out the information that is obscured (this confirms that the owner of the account, you really know what they are), and click Send code.
Now enter the code that is sent to the phone or email address and click Next.
Finally, we got to the page where you can change your settings.
A change means an add and remove
Change mobile phone number, or any other confidential information, is a two-step process: add new, and old ones removed.
Click Add security information.
Choose whether you want to add an email address or phone number, and you are adding a phone number, whether you want the code to be sent by text or voice.
Then you will be sent a code to verify that you have access to the email address or phone number you have provided. You will be required to enter into it, after the new security information will be added to your account.
Eliminate security information is just as easy: click the Delete link associated with the old address or invalid or phone number that you want to remove.
Maintaining your privacy
It is important that you keep your security information so far. I can not stress this enough.
In fact, not doing so is probably the quickest way to lose your account forever.
If you lose access to the (replacement) e-mail address and telephone number that you associated with your account – or because you have forgotten your username or password, or simply no longer have the account or phone – then it may be impossible to recover your account should you need to. That is why more than one designated alternate email address and / or telephone number may be a good idea.
When it comes to the Microsoft account, I also strongly recommend that you set a restore additional code before you need it. As you saw above, it will allow us immediately.
Make sure this information is still correct, and that you always have access to alternate email address and phone number listed.
The security features associated with the Microsoft account – and virtually any email address Hotmail.com, or Outlook.com account is a Microsoft – has been given to the suit recently.
Because account hacking has become such a big problem, especially with the Hotmail account, Microsoft has tightened security quite a bit. Unfortunately, those who are looking for security encryption are getting sent to the phone and their e-mail address no longer exists.
My follow the instructions in the article above to ensure that confidential information is updated is very important.
